Debbie Travers joined Inspire School of Arts and Sciences as an early member of its original Planning Committee in 2009. She has taught Geography, World History, Government and AP Government at Inspire since its inception, as well as at both Chico and Pleasant Valley High Schools since 1996. She has also served on Inspire’s Advisory Board since our planning year. Debbie began her teaching career as a Peace Corps Volunteer for two years in northern Thailand, teaching English and agriculture in a rural community high school. She returned to San Francisco to work for both the Institute of International Education as a Study Abroad Advisor and with the US Peace Corps again as a Recruitment Specialist for northern California. Wanderlust led to a return to Asia with her husband, teaching English in Kathmandu, Nepal, and leading treks throughout the Nepalese and Indian Himalaya for three years. She has also twice volunteered with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India. Fluent in four languages (German, Thai, Nepali), and with a profound desire to ‘bring the world home’, she received a full Social Science Teaching Credential and Master of Arts in Education from Stanford University in 1996. Debbie has studied overseas, both in Germany and Austria, and is an outdoor enthusiast and avid traveler who lives with her husband Bill and three sons, Jasper, Ben and Jesse, next to Bidwell Park.
